Marvin Byrum was hired by the Alabama Department of Labor on March 15, 2007 as a full time Boiler Inspector and shortly after qualified as an Elevator Inspector.

Before coming on board with the state, he served in the United States Navy as a boiler technician and after completing 26 years of service, retired as a Senior Chief Boiler Technician and Steam Generating Plant Inspector (SGPI). Mr. Byrum served on 5 differing combat vessels, starting with the U.S.S. Harry E. Yarnell (CG-17) and finishing with the U.S.S. Bataan (LHD-5).

 During this time he had three shore commands, including Shore Intermediate Maintenance Activity; Boiler Repair Shop “51A”. He also served in Fleet Training Center Norfolk Boiler Controls School and Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Command (MARMC). All located in Norfolk, VA., which houses the world’s largest naval base.

During his time in the service he authored the initial “Electronic Boiler Controls Program” and wrote the “Hagan Nuclear Feed Pump Controls Training Course”.

Mr. Byrum is married to the former Laura Dawn Bennett of Virginia Beach, Virginia.
